Spot Removal Guide

Remember it is always best to seek advise from a professional cleaner, especially when in doubt about a problem. It is better to call too often than to allow the carpet to become soiled or damaged to the point that it cannot be restored. Call our office for more details. The following is a general guide for removing spots.

Acid Spot & Stain Types

Blood, Chocolate, Fruit Juices, Ice Cream, Candy, Eggs, Gravy, Milk, Catsup, Fruit, Gelatin, Glue (Water Base), Permanent, Wave, Neutralizer, and Soft Drinks

All of these are considered acid stains: therefore, these stains are treated with an alkaline solution to have a neutralizing action.

  • Absorb as much as possible with a clean WHITE cloth. DO NOT RUB
  • Make a solution of neutral detergent (1 teaspoon to 1 cup of warm water)
  • Apply only a few drops at a time to the edge of the spot and blot. Continue working toward the center until the entire area has been covered.
  • Make a solution of 1 teaspoon household ammonia to 3/4 cup water.
  • Repeat step #3.
  • Continue applying solution and blotting until no evidence of stain remains on your cloth.
  • Blot up any excess moisture.

Solvent Needed Spot & Stain Types

Ashes, Butter, Crayons, Grease, Cosmetics (Makeup), and Oil

To clean these, a solvent is needed. Be extremely careful and patient because solvents can severely and permanently damage the backing of carpets.

  • Absorb as much as possible with a clean WHITE cloth.
  • To a clean WHITE cloth, apply a dry cleaning solvent a few drops at a time. Blot the edges of the spot, working towards the center.
  • Repeat until the spill has been removed from the Repeat. Remember-BE PATIENT
  • Wash area with a solution of 1 teaspoon of neutral detergent to 1 cup warm water.
  • Remember to use only several drops and blot (NEVER RUB) unit the complete area has been covered.

Alkaline Spot & Stain Types

Alcohol, Beer, Cocktails (Fresh Spilled), Coffee, Mustard, Soot, Sugar, Syrup, Tea, Wine, Permanent Wave, and Solution

All of these are considered as alkaline stains; therefore, they are treated with a slightly acid solution to create a naturalizing action.

  • Absorb as much as possible with a clean WHITE cloth.
  • Make a solution of 1 teaspoon of neutral detergent to 1 cup warm water.
  • Apply only a few drops at a time to the edge of the spot and blot. Continue working toward the center until the entire area has been covered.
  • Make a solution of 1/3 cup white vinegar to 2/3 cup warm water.
  • Repeat step #3.
  • Continue applying solution and blotting until no evidence of stain remains on your cloth.
  • Blot up any excess moisture.

Carpet Cleaner Kit

Several items to keep on hand to remove spills from carpet are:

  • Neutral detergent (liquid and granular), advertised as being gentle or for fine fabrics
  • Household ammonia
  • White vinegar (others could stain the carpet)
  • Oxygen bleach. NEVER use chlorine bleach
  • Grease solvent (dry cleaning fluid or spot remover)
  • Acetone nail polish remover
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Turpentine
  • Clean WHITE cloth or sponge

AS WITH ALL SPOTS, BE PATIENT. ALWAYS WORK FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE SPOT TOWARDS THE CENTER TO AVOID SPREADING.
